The European Red Fox was introduced to Victoria in 1845 as a sport animal. From here it rapidly spread to all states, following the distribution of its major prey the rabbit. After wild dogs, the fox is the second largest land dwelling carnivorous mammal in Australia . It is distributed across almost all of Australia, except for the tropics.
